Carl Sagan & Stephen Hawking - Glorious Dawn

I don't know who had this idea but it is really incredible. The music is excellent and the words are beautiful. They paint a very brilliant image of sunrise from outer space.

Carl Sagan & Stephen Hawking - Glorious Dawn (Cosmos Remixed)

Grizzly Bear - Ready, Able

Typically I try and avoid posting videos that are on every other blog but there are many reasons I'm posting this one:

1. It may be the best video I've seen this year.
2. I find the video very inspiring from an artistic standpoint. You can tell the person who made it spent so much time molding those creatures and really thought about the story they wanted to tell. An artistic success.
3. It's the best Grizzly Bear video yet.
4. This was initially my favorite song on the album (While You Wait had already been floating around and maybe Fine For Now is my favorite now).
5. Shoestring budget.
6. Clay penis.

Amazon's Top 100 Albums of 2k9

I hate when a list starts with #1 and runs backwards so I'll present their top 10 in reverse order:

10 Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
Cool sound but not something I go back to over and over

9 Jay Z - The Blueprint 3
Mostly mediocre but I do like "New York State of Mind" and I know a lot of peeps are bagging on that track.

8 K’Naan - Troubadour
Never heard knaan but he may be related to Kano from Mortal Kombat.

7 Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
Not sure how AnCo, Knaan and Neko Case end up on the same list. Feels like a lie.

6 Girls - Album
I too am a big fan of this. Expect this in my Top 10.

5 The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You
Never heard this album but all the people I know who listen to boring dad rock are super into this album. I won't bother listening.

4 The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
I like most of this album but it's certainly not better than Girls. Or AnCo.

3 Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
I find this album mostly uninspiring. I often compare this to Passion Pit's Manners which I feel has more interesting parts. Expecting this album to be on every list I read --except mine.

2 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It’s Blitz
Worst YYY's album by a long shot. I listened to it a few times. Probably never listen to it again.

1 Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
lulzzzzz

Get the rest of the list here. Can't believe The xx is way down at 78. I feel like that alone negates the authority of this list. And possibly Amazon. Probably won't ever buy anything from Amazon again for this.

Joker & Ginz Mixes

I know everyone is creamin their shorts over Joker but of all the new woozy Dubstept that I'm coming across lately I think he's less interesting than his contemporaries.

I featured many of these contemporaries in Pretty Much Perfect and still stand by my claim that this will be the next scene to blow up.

Joker and Ginz have collaborated on a number of different things including a "Raindrops" remix as well as a few original pieces. In digging around for some more material from these guys I came across a couple of mixes. Joker's is from the last week of 2008 and Ginz's is from this Summer. While Joker's does eventually get interesting, it starts off a little slow. Ginz on the other hand brings it from the beginning and never lets up.

The Soft Pack - Answer to Yourself

I heard this new song from The Soft Pack today and I liked it. I've liked nearly everything I've heard from the band. I went back and listened to "Parasites" and couldn't recall including it in my best of tracks from 2k8. Turns out I didn't. I failed. "Parasites" is better than half the stuff on that list. Really love the song and am digging this new jam as well. I wonder if one day The Soft Pack will actually put out an album. I wonder.

5 Helloween Mixtapes

I, unfortunately, have not had time to whip up a Halloween mix but some great bloggers and musicians are here to save the day. The five following mixtapes should be enough to keep your party going all night. And please tune in to UtahFM.org to hear me keeping it creepy from 9-10:30PM on Oct31. Plenty of horror film themes and other evil tracks to bring the house down.

First up, Fever Ray has put together this exceptionally well crafted and appropriately themed mix of songs for Resident Advisor. Some have always been fairly dark and evil but some only come off that way in the greater context of the mix. It works very well and is highly recommended.

Fever Ray - RA.178

"Walk Me Home" is 17 minutes of new music from Memory Tapes. It was compiled for arawa.fm as a Halloween mix and is a bit darker than most of Memory Tapes' material thus far. Also great.

Memory Tapes - Walk Me Home

Gorilla vs. Bear has put together a group of tracks and samples that, while not specifically Halloween related, do come together to form a dark soundtrack that works well. I love the samples and plan to play some similar things on Saturday's show. Also, thanks to Chris for hooking up that Salem track. WEpt is about as dark and strange as I've heard from the band. They're definitely on drugs, right?

Gorilla vs Bear - Halloween09

Kitsune Noir has taken a similar approach and put together a mix of spooky songs (The Horrors, Fever Ray, NIN) and a group of others that work to make the mix accessible and dark all at once (Girls, Smashing Pumpkins, Grizzly Bear). I love the artwork.

We Never Heard Its Noise | A Kitsune Noir Mixtape

And lastly, one of my favorite new bands (still calling them new until they pick up a little more notoriety), Salem, put together this mix a few months back. It's not exactly a Halloween mix but everything this band does is ultra dark and disturbing and this is no exception. There's even some gabba in there for you techno-heads.

Salem - XXJFG Mix

Basement Jaxx/The xx/Fan Death

Totally one of my favorites from the new album despite what some people are saying.

The xx have just dropped an official vid for their reworking of the Florence and the Machine track, "You've Got the Love."

And finally, Fan Death, a band you may remember from my best of 2k8 list last year. I see Perez Hilton was hyping them a couple of days ago. The guy is a loser but occasionally he gets it right with his music picks (guests for his tour notwithstanding). These girls are great.

Girls - Lust for Life (XXX Edit)

Don't watch this at work. Unless you have a really cool job.

White Collar Crime

Back from sick leave but still stick. I'm now pretty late on this mix from St. Louis' Phaseone. I'm late but it is another in a (getting) long line of great mixes from 2k9.

You've likely heard his "Daily Routine" remix and potentially a handful of others here but there are also a bunch that are brand new. I'm getting really into heavy sounding hip hop tracks like some of those that are found on this. Check out track 13, "Villian Jawn" for one of my favorites.
